Weight loss is a major topic worldwide and obsession with weight is an epidemic. So much of our world is misinformed about how to manage weight and feed ourselves. In the United States, there are many misconceptions about what will support weight management. The rise in fast food has led to a rise in weight and declining health over time.

How can this epidemic be managed and changed using simple strategies?

You guessed it! Bring in olive oil along with other simple strategies that can help manage and change this trend of obesity and poor health.

While high consumption of fat has been to blame for a rise in weight, many studies show this isn’t true. Multiple trending diets right now are super high in fat and people are losing weight on them.

What does this mean about weight and what we eat? The kind of fat you consume matters when it comes to managing weight and or losing weight. Eating fat doesn’t lead to gaining fat, even though the United States historically has bought into that belief with past low fat fad diets.

How does olive oil factor into a weight management or weight loss lifestyle?

Often thought to increase weight gain because it's classified as an oil (it's actually the fruit juice of the olive), EVOO does the opposite. The oleuropein in EVOO actually decreases body weight by encouraging the breakdown of brown fat and using it for energy. Oleuropein also encourages the production of the hormones noradrenaline and adrenaline. (Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminaology, 2008).

Oleuropein is one of the antioxidants found in olive oil which raises the body’s heat production, thus raises the body’s calorie burning efforts. This encourages weight loss. By consuming olive oil, along with a balanced diet of whole foods, you will stay satiated and lose the unwanted weight naturally. 

High weight is also linked with high inflammation. EVOO contains several anti-inflammatory agents, which are the polyphenols and monounsaturated fats. 

High fat can actually mean high nutrients. Including EVOO in each meal gives your body more satiation. Cholecystokinin is a hormone secreted when you feel satiated; through consuming higher levels of good fats, your body will get the cue that it has been satisfied and hunger will decrease.

Slowing sugar absorption means your blood sugar will balance and you won’t crave the in between snacks. 

Calories in versus calories out is a major component of weight loss; if you are eating less and receiving the nutrients you need your body will shed the extra fat.

Fat burning genes turn on with the combination of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats. This sparks metabolism and balances hormones, which support weight loss or management. 

Another fun fact:

EVOO partially inhibits stomach contraction, which means the stomach contents empty more slowly after a meal, prolonging the feeling of fullness after a meal. What does this mean for you? You won’t get hungry as quickly after eating a meal with EVOO as an ingredient.
